O-U-G-H-T: Third Grade Waugh, Forrest 2010-02-23 >>Forrest: My name is Forrest Waugh. I've been in the Columbus area approximately 30, 35 years. I came to the Ohio State University in 1971. My recollection of my first experience with literacy, as I understand it, took place in third grade. I had a teacher by the name of Ms. Gates, and at the time, she was trying to teach everyone in the class how to use O-U-G-H-T, and her technique was to make us feel like we were cussing. At that age, you knew it was wrong to engage in any type of cusswords, so when she presented it to us in this type of context or format, I think we were all very eager. So my recollection, even to this day, when I get ready to spell "thought" or "bought" or something like that, I have memories of her in class talking about O-U-G-H-T. So that's how I continue to remember how to spell those types of words. And that's my literacy narrative.
