My Story Johnson, Betty Jo (2010-11-18) >>BETTY JO JOHNSON: Hi, I'm Betty Jo Johnson. I am from Louisville, Kentucky. I am actually here with my husband, Timothy Johnson, who is in the writing project in Louisville, Kentucky. My story is I have always been, from the time I was small enough to read, an avid reader. I came from a small town, which was Mumfordville, Kentucky. In the summertime when was school was out, there really wasn't that much to do except to read. >>BETTY JO JOHNSON: The local Houchen's Market was right there on the square in Mumfordville. My mom would go every Friday to get groceries for the week. The library was over in the courthouse yard. So, while she was shopping for groceries, I would go to the library and get stacks of books to take home to read till next Friday when she went back to the grocery. I even enjoyed going to summer school in the summertime even though I didn't need to; I was a really good reader and the teacher always bragged on my reading. It made me feel good in front of the other kids when they couldn't read as well. It made me feel really good about my reading and I enjoyed going. >>BETTY JO JOHNSON: I still love to read and I still look at books and buy books all the time. One of these days, I will get around; I just don't have a lot of time to devote to that right now.
