>>DEB: Hi my name is Deb Debenedictis; I'm with the National Writing Project at Kent State University. This is my literacy story; I'll tell you the beginnings. I just remember from being a young child my mom and dad always reading books, always the newspaper daily, so I read the newspaper daily. My mom took us up to the local library every summer; we joined the summer club and got to get stars on our chart. So we had reading at an early age and I can remember from reading the newspaper that there was always information on how you could get a pen pal from all over the world. So I got pen pals from Hawaii and France and Canada and wrote to them for many, many, many years. Then there were writing contests and then I would enter contests and even win some now and again and that just set the stage for the rest of my life for being a reader and a writer.
