[00:00:08:01]	*laughs* [ Interviewer ] Uh how old are you?

[00:00:12:01]	I'm twenty-three. [ Interviewer ] And what do you do?

[00:00:15:01]	I'm a student [ Interviewer ] Alright cool.

[00:00:18:02]	[ Interviewer ] Could you please tell us about your first experiences

[00:00:24:03]	When I was little my grandma played piano a lot. 

[00:00:27:03]	So... *sniffs*

[00:00:30:04]	I never really learned how to play but it was something that she taught me a little bit.

[00:00:33:04]	[ Interviewer ] So she played in the house with you?  Mhmm

[00:00:36:04]	[ Interviewer ] Sort of mini recitals?

[00:00:37:04]	Yeah she just, I mean she had a they had a baby grand at their house.

[00:00:41:04]	So she'd play when I was over.

[00:00:42:05]	[ Interviewer ] And what was, when did you first start 

[00:00:46:05]	actually learning music?

[00:00:48:05]	Fifth grade in band.

[00:00:50:06]	[ Interviewer ] Mhmm *sniffs* What instrument did you play?

[00:00:53:06]	Snare drum. [ Interviewer ] How did you decide that?

[00:00:56:06]	Uh I wanted to play trombone originally but my mom talked me out of it

[00:01:00:06]	because she said she couldn't get any noise out of a horn so I probably wouldn't be able to either.

[00:01:04:07]	[ Interviewer ] *laughs* And she told me that she played the drums and I was like

[00:01:08:08]	"ooh mom did that so I want to do it too."

[00:01:11:08]	[ Interviewer ] So did uh, did both your parents play music instru- musical instruments?

[00:01:15:08]	Uh yup my dad plays guitar and my mom plays pretty much whatever she wants to. *laughs*

[00:01:19:08]	[ Interviewer ] And do they still play it even today?

[00:01:21:27]	Uh not so much today but for a, when I was little my dad played guitar a lot.

[00:01:25:28]	[ Interviewer ] Did you ever end up learning to play guitar? Nope. *laughs*

[00:01:29:28]	[ Interviewer ] *sniffs*

[00:01:33:28]	[ Interviewer ] So you started music, again fifth grade,

[00:01:37:28]	Why did you keep up? Why did you keep on doing that then?

[00:01:40:28]	I just found that I really really liked it and

[00:01:44:29]	part of it was up until then in school we had to sing

[00:01:48:29]	and the big kids got to be in band and I wanted to do what the big kids did. [ Interviewer ] *laughs*

[00:01:52:29]	[ Interviewer ] What was uh what was the band class and music like

[00:01:56:29]	in high school?

[00:01:58:00]	Umm what do you mean?

[00:02:01:00]	[ Interviewer ] So like did you have, did you participate in like

[00:02:04:00]	music ensembles, bands, or like music theory classes?

[00:02:08:01]	Umm really uh it was they were all ensembles.

[00:02:12:01]	Pretty much. And I joined marching band in, I joined my high school

[00:02:16:01]	marching band in the 8th grade and then I sort of, then I stuck with. [ Interviewer ] Mhmm.

[00:02:20:01]	I wouldn't have kept playing after middle school if it hadn't been for that. So-

[00:02:22:02]	[ Interviewer ] Really? Yeah

[00:02:24:02]	[ Intervewer ] Well why's that?

[00:02:26:03]	Um by the time I was in the eight grade I was kind of I really didn't like practicing very much. *mutual chuckles*

[00:02:30:03]	And, I don't know, some of the fun was starting to wear off 

[00:02:34:04]	and then I think at the end of my seventh grade year my teacher

[00:02:38:05]	came up to me she said "Hey we need cymbal players. Do you want to do this?" [ Interviewer ] *laughs*

[00:02:42:05]	And it was really fun so.

[00:02:44:06]	[ Interviewer ] So you played cymbals initially in your high school band?

[00:02:46:06]	Yup [ Interviewer ] And then did you play any other instruments?

[00:02:49:07]	I played bass drum my freshman and sophomore year and then snare my junior and senior year.

[00:02:53:08]	[ Interviewer ] *sniffs* Did you ever, uh, take like private lessons

[00:02:57:08]	on any of these instruments?

[00:02:59:09]	Um I took private lessons for, ah, on snare drum and then on drumset.

[00:03:03:09]	[ Interviewer ] Mkay. *sniffs* Did you ever, did you play in any bands er like

[00:03:07:10]	jazz grou- ensembles on drumset?

[00:03:09:10]	Yup I was in jazz band and then I was orchestra for the musicals.

[00:03:13:10]	Those were all drumset.

[00:03:15:11]	[ Interviewer ] What were your um like private lessons like? On, on like drumset?

[00:03:19:12]	Um. [ Interviewer ] LIke for instance who was your teacher?

[00:03:23:12]	Steve Dodge. For Columbus Percussion. [ Interviewer ] Mhmm.

[00:03:27:12]	[ Interviewer ] How long were like the lessons? About half an hour.

[00:03:29:13]	[ Interviewer ] Would you go like once a week or so?

[00:03:32:14]	Yeah, usually run ran over *mutual chuckles* [ Interviewer ] *sniffs*

[00:03:35:14]	[ Interviewer ] Did you like doing drumset more than snare drum

[00:03:38:15]	or snare drum more than drums?

[00:03:41:15]	Um, I don't know. At first drumset

[00:03:44:16]	was kind of intimidating because there were lots of -- *laughs* there was a lot going on.

[00:03:47:16]	[ Interviewer ] Mhmm. So...

[00:03:50:17]	I don't know I think once I started college I liked

[00:03:54:18]	snare drum a little bit more [ Interviewer ] Mhmm. Um but yeah.

[00:03:58:18]	It was, there was a lot of talking in lessons *door closes* and sometimes it was really frustrating

[00:04:02:19]	cause he would make me slow down everything. [ Interviewer ] Mhmm.

[00:04:05:19]	It's like you have to slowly so you nee- can play it faster.

[00:04:08:20]	But it ended up working even though I cursed a lot of the times

[00:04:12:20]	Why are you making me do this? [ Interviewer ] How do you practice?

[00:04:16:21]	[ Interviewer ] Like for instance on snare drum. What are you like, start up slow and then speed it up? 

[00:04:20:22]	Yup [ Interviewer ] Just rep it over and over?

[00:04:21:22]	Yup.

[00:04:23:23]	[ Interviewer ] K and so an I'll guess the end what's like your very favorite

[00:04:27:23]	of all the instruments to play?

[00:04:29:23]	That's really hard, I don't know. *mutual chuckles*

[00:04:38:11]	Drumset. Just cuz I don't get to play it very often [ Interviewer ] Mhmm.
