Time transcripts of Joe(Bretts4thNarrative) [00:00:00:00] [ Interviewer ] Alright. Uh why don't you introduce yourself? [00:00:04:01] Yeah. Uh I'm Joe Plattenburg. Umm I play the trumpet [00:00:08:01] and the clarinet. I played a lot through high school. I've been in marching band [00:00:12:01] and concert bands and stuff. So uh, go... [00:00:16:02] with it I guess. [00:00:17:02] [ Interviewer ] Cool. *sniffs* Could you tell us about your very first experiences with music? [00:00:21:02] Um yeah. I mean I guess I never was really formally introduced [00:00:25:02] to music [ snare drum hit ] until probably middle school. We had like a [00:00:29:02] um instrumental program type thing where you like [00:00:33:02] played different instruments and picked whatever you liked best. [00:00:36:03] But I guess before that um I had had some friends that had [00:00:39:03] older siblings that played instruments and [00:00:42:03] one of them had a clarinet and I thought it was really cool and had lots of buttons on it and stuff [00:00:46:03] so um... [ Interviewer ] Did they ever let you play it? [00:00:48:04] I never actually played it before but I just thought it looked cool so as soon as I got to middle [00:00:52:04] school um I was like I wanna play this. So once we got to the that section [00:00:56:04] of the experimental like program or whatever I, I [00:01:00:04] played the clarinet and I really liked it. So, played it through middle school and high school [00:01:04:05] and um bands and stuff like that there. [00:01:08:05] [ Interviewer ] Did any, did any of like your older siblings your younger siblings did they have any, play instruments or your parents? [00:01:13:05] Um the only would be my mom played piano when she was in high school. [00:01:18:06] And she didn't continue after that though. [00:01:21:06] And my uncle, who's like far out of town, played trumpet. [00:01:24:06] But aside from that I reallly didn't have much um like hands on experience other than people just [00:01:28:06] telling me about their own experiences with it. [00:01:30:07] [ Interviewer ] Do you remember much about your, er, did your earliest music [00:01:34:08] educators, like in middle school and high school, did they like leave a big impression on you? [00:01:38:08] I would say so. Especially in probably high school more than school. [00:01:42:08] Um in middle school it was sort of like, people were just doing it because their friends [00:01:46:09] were doing it, I thought. And no one was particularly serious [00:01:50:09] until once we got in high school. [00:01:52:10] My high school band director, I thought, really left a strong impression on me. [00:01:56:10] Just the way that he taught, I felt was uh influential. [00:02:00:10] And he was also the marching band director and that had a strong impact on me. [00:02:04:10] as I continued with that. [00:02:06:10] [ Interviewer ] What was marching band like in high school? [00:02:08:11] Umm, I feel like it was probably pretty similar to a lot of other high schools. [00:02:12:11] We had rehearsal a few times a week. Um we would [ sousaphone plays ] [00:02:16:11] have one show that we practiced all through the summer. Um we would memorize our music [00:02:20:12] and go to competitions during the fall. Uh play at football games [00:02:24:12] and travel to away games. Same kind of deal as probably a lot of other high schools. [00:02:28:12] [ Interviewer ] And was uh, did you also [00:02:32:12] continue in your concert bands in high school? [00:02:35:12] Yeah I played in several groups, aside from marching band. [00:02:38:13] I did a um a concert band, which we called the [00:02:42:13] Wind Ensemble, for a few years. I was also [00:02:46:13] in jazz band, I played saxophone there. And [00:02:50:14] I did like the pep bands and I also played in the pit orchestra for the musicals. [00:02:54:14] So yeah. [00:02:55:14] [ Interviewer ] See I didn't, I didn't know that you played saxophone. Were there any other instruments that you like maybe [00:02:59:14] experimented on or tried out for a little while? [00:03:01:14] Um mainly clarinet and sax were the only ones that I did through high school. [00:03:05:14] Uh I played several different saxes. I did like alto, tenor, bari, through different [00:03:09:14] years in jazz band. And then I played clarinet. I guess I played bass [00:03:13:15] clarinet in the community orchestra in my city and E-flat clarinet [00:03:17:15] a few times in Wind Ensemble. But I mainly stuck reeds up [00:03:21:15] through high school before I got to college. [00:03:23:16] [ Interviewer ] Did you do any, uh, solo competitions? [00:03:26:16] Yeah uh I did a solo and ensemble competition [00:03:29:16] the my last three years of high school. So sophomore year on. [00:03:32:16] And I got a grade of 1 in all of those. [00:03:35:16] And um I guess [00:03:38:17] two of the times also I did the uh ensemble [00:03:41:17] competition, portion of it. So I played with other people from [00:03:44:17] Wind Ensemble in, in like a woodwind quintet [00:03:47:17] or something like that. [00:03:48:18] [ Interviewer ] Did you ever receive um private instructions? [00:03:52:18] Um not regularly or frequently. I, I had a teacher for a little [00:03:56:18] bit in middle school. [00:03:58:19] Um high school, I really didn't have a teacher. [00:04:02:19] Uh eventually my second year of college I took lessons for a quarter [00:04:06:19] but in terms of private lessons that was, it was never very formal [00:04:10:20] or very um lengthy or anything. [00:04:13:20] [ Interviewer ] How come you decided to continue playing the clarinet in college? [00:04:16:20] Um a lot of this probably has to do with the fact that uh my senior year [00:04:20:20] like halfway through the year, as an early graduation present, my mom got me [00:04:23:21] a brand new Buffet wood clarinet which was kind of expensive. [00:04:27:21] And so I would've felt bad if I had just like stopped playing once I got to college. [00:04:31:21] But honestly though at the same time, um, I've just enjoyed playing [00:04:35:21] all through high school and I wanted to keep that up. And the, my teachers [00:04:39:22] always impressed on me the importance of being a lifelong musician [00:04:43:22] as they would say. So I felt like it would be something good to, you know, meet other people [00:04:47:22] and just have something to do. [00:04:49:22] [ Interviewer ] What have you done in high -- in college? [00:04:51:23] In regards to continuing your musical experience? [00:04:53:23] Um I've performed in the Collegiate Winds, which is a concert [00:04:57:24] band. I play clarinet there for the past four years. I've also been [00:05:01:24] in the Athletic Band, I play clarinet and trumpet there, and in the Marching Band, with trumpet. [00:05:06:24] [ Interviewer ] So when did you make this uh transition to trumpet? [00:05:09:24] Um that was the fall of my freshman [00:05:12:24] year of college. Uh I came here at Ohio State and I [00:05:16:25] came to the football games and everything. And I'd heard the marching band before and how [00:05:20:25] um impressive they were and everything. And once I saw them at the football games I [00:05:24:25] just decided that I really wanted to be a part of this organziation. And just [00:05:28:25] almost became obsessed with it. So I just um, I made it [00:05:32:25] a decision that fall that I wanted to be a part of that er [00:05:36:26] do everything in my power that I could. So I started practicing trumpet as frequently [00:05:40:26] as I could, probably about an hour a day, every day. [00:05:44:27] I got the DVD of [ outside chatter ] the fundamentals and I talked to other people that I knew -- known that were [00:05:49:27] in the marching band. To get help with my marching and everything [00:05:54:27] and um up until that summer where I tried out and made the marching band. [ outside chatter ] [00:05:59:28] [ Interviewer ] And what's, what's the marching band been like since you've been in it? [00:06:02:28] Um probably the single most [00:06:07:28] beneficial and positive experience in my time in college, I would say. [00:06:11:28] Um between the performances um and everything, that's always [00:06:15:28] amazing. Being, having the opportunity to perform in front of [00:06:19:29] thousands of people that are all cheering for you, in addition to the [00:06:23:29] social aspect of it. Just being able to meet all these new people [00:06:27:29] all these new friends and everything that I feel like truly will be lifelong friendships. [00:06:31:29] Um those, those two things together [00:06:35:29] have made it a really beneficial and positive experience. [00:06:40:00] [ Interviewer ] So once you're finished all up with college, are you going to put up the trumpet and the clarinet? [00:06:44:00] Or are you going to try and continue in some way? [00:06:46:00] I mean, I would like to ideally say that I would like to continue. [00:06:50:01] Um I mean I guess if I did try to pursue that it would probably be [00:06:54:01] with the Alumni Band. I know they have different functions they do in addition to the Alumni Game. [00:06:58:01] Um or like a community orchestra or band or [00:07:02:02] something like that in whatever city I end up moving to. [00:07:05:02] I, like sometimes churches will have things like that or like community [00:07:08:02] organizations will have bands and that sort of thing. So [00:07:11:02] at this point I'd like to say I'd like to continue but [00:07:14:02] um I guess that's yet to be seen. But there's [00:07:17:02] plenty of time probably down the road. [00:07:19:03] [ Interviewer ] Alright. Thank you very much. [00:07:20:03] Yup. Thank you.
