Time transcripts of Chad Chessin compressed [00:00:00:00] Interviewer: Please state your name. [00:00:03:05] Chad Chessin: Chad Chessin. [00:00:04:22] Interviewer: Is there anything else you'd like to say about yourself? [00:00:06:29] Chad Chessin: No sir [ laughing ]. [00:00:08:15] Interviewer: And what is the subject of your narrative today? [00:00:11:17] Chad Chessin: I'm gonna be talking about my time at a Jewish day school [00:00:15:02] and how I felt literate in Hebrew. [00:00:17:20] Interviewer: Please begin with your narrative. [00:00:19:24] Chad Chessin: Alright so I'm from Cincinnati Ohio. [00:00:22:01] I went to a Jewish day school called Yavneh day school. [00:00:25:14] And everyday we would have both English sections [00:00:29:24] and Hebrew sections split equally. [00:00:32:18] And in retrospect, I would say that I didn't leave [00:00:37:10] with as much Hebrew knowledge as I would have liked to [00:00:40:14] because I didn't really maintain my studies. [00:00:42:24] But I definitely feel as if I was literate at some point, [00:00:47:04] almost fluent at a point actually [00:00:49:25] toward the latter end of my day school education. [00:00:53:09] So, the first time I felt literate in another language [00:00:57:08] was probably I'd say about third grade with Hebrew [00:00:59:22] because I had a really good teacher named Mrs. Clerman. [00:01:03:25] And she had this technique of immersion where she wouldn't let us speak in her class [00:01:12:14] unless it was Hebrew [ laughing ]. [00:01:13:26] And if we spoke in English, [00:01:16:16] she would just make us say it again until we get it right [00:01:19:09] even if it wasn't good grammar, but until she could comprehend it. [00:01:22:12] And I think that that technique really made me [00:01:24:19] not only in class know Hebrew [00:01:28:07] but I would go home and I would study on my own [00:01:31:24] because if I don't know how to say this [00:01:34:13] I'm not going to be able to talk in the class. [00:01:36:09] I'm a pretty talkative person [00:01:37:22] so that would have not been good for me [ laughing ]. [00:01:40:22] So, I'd say literacy would have happened after that class [00:01:46:10] because it gave me the ability [00:01:52:04] not only to comprehend Hebrew, [00:01:53:10] but it also let me speak it [00:01:55:08] and be able to read it. [00:01:56:20] And then from that point on until I'd say after 7th grade [00:02:00:03] when I went to a public school [00:02:01:02] I was fairly adequate in Hebrew. [00:02:03:12] And when I went to Israel [00:02:04:14] I was able to maintain conversations. [00:02:06:08] And now I don't really know as much Hebrew as I'd like to, [00:02:11:21] but the Hebrew that I do comprehend is thanks to her [00:02:15:11] and that day school education. ... [00:02:22:02] Interviewer: Is there anything else you'd like to add? [00:02:23:26] Chad Chessin: Not really, go learn Hebrew. [00:02:27:05] It's a good language a good character system. [ laughing ] [00:02:29:80] Interviewer: Alright. Thank you.
