Time transcripts of Matthew compressed [00:00:00:00] Interviewer: Please state your name. [00:00:03:07] Matthew: Matthew. [00:00:04:05] Interviewer: Is there anything you'd like to say about yourself? [00:00:06:18] Matthew: I'm a freshman at OSU, obviously, [00:00:10:10] in AEPI, an environmental engineering major. [00:00:15:02] Interviewer: Please continue with your narrative. [00:00:17:02] Matthew: So, I started taking Spanish in 7th grade, [00:00:22:01] when everyone in my school picked a language. [00:00:24:11] I picked Spanish just because it was the most popular one. [00:00:28:19] Also my sister did Spanish, [00:00:29:25] so that way if I needed any help [00:00:31:06] I would have someone in the house who could help me. [00:00:33:03] And you know I took Spanish until 11th grade. [00:00:37:03] And I always used it in the classroom. [00:00:39:15] I always did well in the academic setting. [00:00:42:09] I did all the exercises in the workbook, [00:00:44:07] but I never really had an experience to use it [00:00:46:28] where I actually need to speak Spanish. [00:00:48:15] I was always doing it for exercise. [00:00:50:07] And also in high school I was in a youth group called BBYO, [00:00:55:25] which was an international Jewish youth group, [00:00:58:15] and they had all these international programs [00:01:01:16] just like within the country, [00:01:02:24] but from kids all over like leadership stuff, [00:01:05:09] and they also had trips you could go on around the country. [00:01:07:22] And I had never done one all through high school. [00:01:09:28] So the summer before senior year [00:01:12:04] and I wanted to go on one of these trips, [00:01:13:11] and one of them was to Costa Rica. [00:01:15:19] I was really excited for it. [00:01:17:28] It was two weeks. [00:01:18:26] It was an awesome time. [00:01:19:21] We did a lot of stuff with Judaism, [00:01:23:04] but then also we did a lot of sight seeing. [00:01:25:20] Had a tour guide who was great, [00:01:27:23] and actually kind of motivated me to do environmental engineering. [00:01:31:16] Anyways. [00:01:33:00] So, about Spanish. [00:01:34:23] I was one of the few people on the trip [00:01:36:20] who actually had a good understanding of Spanish [00:01:39:06] since I had been taking it for four years. [00:01:41:04] I still was no where near fluent, [00:01:42:13] but I still could communicate and get around with it. [00:01:44:25] And it was one of the first places, [00:01:46:10] like I said before [00:01:47:09] when I could actually use it for practicality [00:01:49:24] rather than just doing exercises. [00:01:51:02] So, in Costa Rica, the air is really humid. [00:01:54:14] And so, everyone's electronic devices [00:01:56:14] would like start freaking out because of humidity. [00:01:58:07] And, one of the things that they did to fix that [00:02:02:04] was put it in a bag of rice. [00:02:03:24] So, like, this girl's camera was broken, [00:02:05:23] so she wanted some dry rice to put her camera in, [00:02:08:01] so it would hopefully be fixed. [00:02:09:08] So, we were at this restaurant this one time, [00:02:12:24] and she's trying to talk to the waiter. [00:02:15:28] And she's like, "Can I have rice? Dry rice please? Can I have dry rice?" [00:02:19:08] And the waiter is looking at her like, que? Que? Que? What? [00:02:22:28] And then she's like Matt come here. [00:02:26:06] I'm like ok. [00:02:26:29] And she's like ask him for dry rice. [00:02:28:19] I'm like alright. [00:02:30:13] And I was like, [00:02:31:15] Puedo tener arroz para no esta cocinado? [00:02:34:05] And then he's like oh yeah, [00:02:36:09] Claro que si. [00:02:37:03] And then he goes back in the kitchen, [00:02:38:25] and gets the rice for the girl. [00:02:42:13] And then two days later her camera was fixed. [00:02:44:07] But it was the first time when I actually used Spanish at a time [00:02:49:03] when it had a necessity to communicate. [00:02:51:13] So, I felt literate [00:02:53:22] cause it was a skill that not many other people really had who I was with [00:02:58:13] and, like I said before I wasn't just doing it for fun [00:03:03:02] or for a grade on a test, [00:03:04:14] but I was doing it to actually. [00:03:06:29] I was using it for a practical purpose, [00:03:08:21] which is really why I learned Spanish in the first place. [00:03:11:22] I don't just learn Spanish to take tests. [00:03:13:14] I learn it to use, which was the first time I did that. [00:03:17:14] Interviewer: Is there anything you'd like to add? [00:03:20:11] Matthew: Nope. [00:03:22:18] Interviewer: Alright, thank you.
