Time transcripts of Jae_audio [00:00:00:00] [interviewer: okay, can you introduce yourself?] [00:00:03:29] Hi, I'm Jae. I'm from Korea and it's been three months since I came here. Yeah, that's all. [00:00:13:15] [interviewer: So, how old were you when you started learning English?] [00:00:18:18] Oh, I think it was like six years old maybe? [00:00:22:11] [interviewer: six years old?] Yeah. [00:00:23:26] [interviewer: Okay, how did you start to learn? [00:00:26:17] Did you learn in school or did you go to extra classes outside of school?] [00:00:30:03] Um, yeah, my mom let me learn some English by some extra, [00:00:36:02] you know, academic classes. [00:00:39:25] So, I learned it from some tutors when I was young. [00:00:46:19] [interviewer: So what made you want to learn English? [00:00:49:21] Why did you start learning?] [00:00:50:25] Uh, it's kind of not I want[ed] to. [00:00:54:22] It's mandatory for - to live [in] this global societies. [00:01:02:15] And, I think it's cool now 'cause whenever I travel a lot, around the world, [00:01:09:02] I met a lot of peoples from different countries. [00:01:13:24] If we don't have English, we can't communicate [with] each other even. [00:01:19:19] But with English we can communicate [with] each other just, [00:01:23:07] a little bit about yourself, your life and your country. [00:01:27:02] So... so I think that's cool. Yeah, that's cool. [00:01:30:21] [interviewer: Yeah? So, do you feel pretty comfortable speaking in English now?] [00:01:37:03] Not yet. [laughing] I'm so nervous whenever I talk [00:01:42:02] but I try 'cause, you know, [00:01:45:10] I want to improve my English so har - so fluently. But, yeah. I will try. [00:01:55:15] [interviewer: So what is that like, here in America then; [00:01:59:23] interacting with people who mainly, only speak English?] [00:02:03:09] Uh... uhm... yeah...? [laughing] [00:02:14:06] [interviewer: Here, I'll rephrase it. Um, what are some of the hard things, [00:02:18:26] or easy things about speaking with native English speakers?] [00:02:23:22] Okay, I think it's quite different from person by person [00:02:28:05] 'cause I met some peoples who, even though they- they were born here, [00:02:33:03] they had lots of international friends and they're quite used to - about some weird accent, [00:02:41:26] about many other people from other countries. [00:02:45:24] I met - I also met a lot of friends - a lot of people [00:02:51:01] who can't even understand those very typical accent of like Chinese or Korean, [00:02:57:14] so it depends on the person. [00:03:00:22] [interviewer: okay, so what was it like learning English [00:03:06:22] in school in South Korea, or just in general?] [00:03:08:14] Um, we learn reading and writing usually emphasize on grammar, [00:03:15:22] so we're expert at grammar, you know. [00:03:18:21] Sometimes better than Americans! [00:03:20:07] But it's different from speaking. I think that's the most bad part [00:03:24:09] 'cause we have to practice speaking actually 'cause we're not gonna communicate [00:03:34:05] with other people by writing at this place. [00:03:37:16] So I think that they should emphasize speaking too. But they are changing now. [00:03:44:14] [interviewer: So, what was - was that one of the hardest things about English [00:03:54:13] was just the lack of speaking practice?] Yeah. [00:03:55:16] [interviewer: what was - what did you like most about learning English?] [00:03:59:20] Umm... English... learning about English... English, in my opinion, [00:04:16:19] English is more than just one - just a language from one country - America. [00:04:22:25] But, it's kind of global language nowadays, So, I think that's [00:04:26:25] very cool because, as I say that we can interact with [00:04:30:25] other peoples that even though we don't know a word of their [00:04:34:25] countries but, but we can still communicate with each other by [00:04:38:25] English. The - the material. So [00:04:42:25] I think that's very cool. That's the part that I like most. [00:04:46:25] [interviewer: alright, well thank you very much!] Thank you! Bye!
