Time transcripts of VID00021 [00:00:00:00] Please tell us a little bit about yourself [00:00:04:01] I am a senior graduating with a biology degree [00:00:08:02] in a couple weeks [00:00:10:02] And what is your literacy narrative about today [00:00:13:02] I babysit for two of my younger cousins [00:00:16:02] and I've gotten to see their progression learning how to read and [00:00:20:02] helping each other how to read, Demi is 5 [00:00:24:03] and I started babysitting her when she was just a little baby [00:00:28:03] and I have gotten to see her grow up and practice reading, [00:00:32:04] learning her letters, learning how to write [00:00:36:04] and then her younger brother, Will is now 3 and she's been [00:00:40:04] able to help him practice reading and start to learn [00:00:44:05] his letters even though he is very young [00:00:47:06] [00:00:48:06] Okay, and do you believe they help each other learning? [00:00:52:07] Yes and I have gotten to see them do it together [00:00:56:08] so if I am busy doing something at the house and I don't have time I can tell [00:01:00:08] them hey kids why don't go read and Demi can kind of take the lead on [00:01:04:08] things and help Will look at books and [00:01:08:08] learn letters just like she did [00:01:12:09] And what are some ways they help each other read and write? [00:01:16:09] Do they play at writing? [00:01:18:10] If we are doing a craft or something and [00:01:20:10] Demi likes to write her name a lot and write Will's name write mom [00:01:24:10] dad and so she will look at letters and be able to copy it and then [00:01:28:10] she can kind of help Will go through the motions of writing letters as well [00:01:32:11] Can you think of any books you've read to them? [00:01:36:11] ...They like Dr. Seuss books [00:01:40:11] because of not only the funny stories but [00:01:44:12] the colors and pictures and stuff that are included in the book [00:01:48:12] [00:01:52:12] Now let's talk about you, [00:01:56:13] can you tell us any memories about reading and writing when [00:01:58:13] you were young? [00:02:00:13] I remember reading the Arthur books [00:02:04:13] when I was younger, and it helped that there was also a T.V. [00:02:08:14] show about it but it was one of my favorites when I was little [00:02:12:14] and my mom would go out and buy new books of the series [00:02:14:14] and bring them home and read them to me and then [00:02:16:25] eventually I got to the level that I could read it on my own and I enjoyed it [00:02:21:25] Can you tell us about a time [00:02:23:08] where you ever felt illiterate in a certain situation [00:02:27:08] I know when I came to college, being a Biology major I had to really practice at [00:02:31:08] reading scientific articles. It's a big part of [00:02:35:08] higher level Biology classes here at Ohio State [00:02:39:08] it takes a little bit of a different capacity to read [00:02:43:08] that level of [00:02:47:08] intelligence and the wording is a lot different and the structure [00:02:51:08] of the articles so a lot of my early Biology classes [00:02:55:08] gave us practice to learn how to get through the articles and [00:02:59:09] digest what they were saying and be able to [00:03:03:09] eventually write our own scientific articles [00:03:07:09] Thank you
