[00:00:00:00]	[ Stacy: ] Hi, I’m Stacy, today is April 20th and this is my literacy narrative. 

[00:00:10:03]	[ Interviewer: ] Hello Stacy. So are your parents literate in more than one language? 

[00:00:16:28]	[ Stacy: ] Yeah my dad speaks German he’s actually like, he’s from Germany, 

[00:00:24:21]	I’m not sure exactly where, that sounds horrible but. 

[00:00:27:28]	My mom only speaks English. Like she apparently tried to learn German 

[00:00:33:28]	when they first started dating and it just went horribly like she said 

[00:00:39:25]	it was the hardest thing she ever tried to do, because she couldn’t pronounce 

[00:00:43:02]	any of the words. And like I guess it’s all in your throat or something, 

[00:00:48:20]	and she just like could not do it. So eventually she gave up. 

[00:00:53:22]	And so now my parents, they only like speak English ever so. 

[00:01:01:19]	[ Interviewer: ] So Stacy, are you literate in more than one language? 

[00:01:07:26]	[ Stacy: ] Well I’ve been working on it. I’m taking Spanish classes here at Ohio State, 

[00:01:14:24]	and like, I mean I’m in like the higher level courses or whatever now, 

[00:01:20:17]	but I still don’t feel like I’m really like literate. 

[00:01:22:29]	Like I still struggle and I still have to look up words like all the time. 

[00:01:27:20]	But like someday I hope to be literate in Spanish, I guess, if I can. 

[00:01:35:01]	[ Interviewer: ] So why didn’t you learn German as a child? 

[00:01:41:15]	[ Stacy: ] Well like I said, my mom can’t speak it at all. 

[00:01:46:03]	And since it’s like just my dad and my mom like there was never a reason to 

[00:01:52:18]	really like speak German, or like read and write in German ever. 

[00:01:57:28]	So I guess my parents were just like, 

[00:02:00:08]	“whatever, it really doesn’t matter if she learns it cause she like probably won’t need it here.” 

[00:02:05:27]	[ Interviewer: ] So do you feel like you can still connect with the German side of your family? 

[00:02:13:28]	[ Stacy: ] Well I mean like, I do in a way. Because like I’m friends with some of them on Facebook

[00:02:20:19]	 now. Because my dad made a Facebook which is weird to begin with. 

[00:02:25:07]	But he like friended all of his like German relatives on Facebook. 

[00:02:31:20]	And so then they all found like me, and they’re like “friend request!” and I’m like “okay.” 

[00:02:38:15]	And then they post things on my wall, that are like all in German. 

[00:02:42:22]	And I don’t understand, any of it. So I use Google translate to like try and figure out what they said, 

[00:02:51:22]	but then it ends up being really difficult because like Google translate is not that good. 

[00:02:59:08]	Like I’ll type things in and it’ll be like, “the horse had she a fence.” Excuse me. 

[00:03:12:09]	And I’m like “okay well I seriously doubt that’s what my German cousin was

[00:03:17:07]	 trying to tell me, so..” and then I just like try and figure it out from that 

[00:03:22:25]	and then I go on Google translate and I like type in English phrases and try 

[00:03:27:25]	and get them over to German. But then I’m like, 

[00:03:30:22]	“I know if like the translation from the German to the English is that bad like

[00:03:38:01]	 the English to the German probably like doesn’t make sense at all”. 

[00:03:44:23]	And so I feel like most of the time we have no idea what we’re saying to each other. 

[00:03:49:20]	But, it’s still fun to like mess around and stuff with it. 

[00:03:55:24]	Even though we can’t always understand what’s going on. 

[00:03:59:20]	Like sometimes my dad will translate for me but like he’s not always around, so. 

[00:04:05:23]	[ Interviewer: ] So do you still feel like you can connect with your culture through translations? 

[00:04:15:14]	[ Stacy: ] Like, not really, I mean translations are really hard because it’s like, 

[00:04:24:07]	it’s not exactly what you want. Like, sometimes when my dad is like translating 

[00:04:32:25]	stuff for me, I’m like “what does it say?” and he’s like “Hahaha! It’s only funny in German.” 

[00:04:37:26]	And I’m like, “Okay, well, I don’t understand German so I don’t get the joke.” 

[00:04:44:13]	And I feel like I can’t really connect with my culture on that side that much because 

[00:04:50:15]	there’re like so many things that just like knowing the language, 

[00:04:56:06]	like little idioms and stuff, like, I don’t know. Like I feel like I just don’t get it like they get it. 

[00:05:05:04]	Like with Spanish, like the more I’ve been learning about the language like I’ve also been learning 

[00:05:11:14]	about the culture and like it makes a lot more sense that way. 

[00:05:15:24]	But with German I just. Like I try and talk to my family and stuff but it just, 

[00:05:25:03]	it doesn’t always like come across and translate properly.
