Reading Novels Johnson, Joseph JOSEPH: This is just a story about when I first starting large novels on my own. I was in about third or fourth grade and my dad would read to me every night, just a regular young adult novel that he'd read. One day he was at work really late and wasn't going to get home in time and so I decided I wanted to read it myself so I went and got his book and just started reading. After that I pretty much just kept reading, all the time at school, I got in trouble a lot in school for that. I didn't actually start writing much until just about a year ago when I started coming to college. My Comp. 1 instructor, Dr. Isum, gave an assignment just to write something about your name, how you got it, what it means, that kind of stuff. I took a completely different approach to it then with the kind of requirements of the assignment and she loved it. So I just started writing more and really got into it and never really stopped.
