{QTtext}{font:Arial}{justify:center}{size:16}{timeScale:100}{width:320}{height:40}{backColor:0, 0, 0} [00:00:00.00] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}[ interviewer ] how did you--how did you populate your shelves? How did you [00:00:04.03] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}decide or how did you get in contact with people who were making stuff that you liked? [00:00:08.05] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}or whatever? [ Olivera ] yeah, um it was [00:00:12.06] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}it was this crazy thing called the internet! Um, and it really was like [00:00:16.07] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}craft had just kind of um started popping up [00:00:20.08] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}in, I'd say within the 5 years before--since like about 2000. [00:00:24.11] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}Um, people were really, there was like craft forums and sites about like [00:00:28.12] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}making your own things and, and selling them. So just like even turning [00:00:32.14] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}your um creative craft pursuits into small businesses [00:00:36.15] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}Um, so more people were doing that, and um, and this was definitely [00:00:40.16] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}the days before Etsy. Um, when I was first scouting around like Etsy didn't [00:00:44.18] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}exist. Um and I think like it [00:00:48.21] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}went into beta at some point during this uh [00:00:52.23] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}the process of like when we were looking for artists. And we're like, wow there's this crazy things called Etsy! [00:00:56.24] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}And um, so we found a lot of people through that, and uh [00:01:00.25] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}I'll tell you a lot of other people were also like in, in my same [00:01:04.27] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}boat of being like naive and enthusiastic about this, like [00:01:08.29] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}none of us had a lot of business experience, so when I [00:01:12.31] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}contacted people and said like, 'hey I love your stuff. We're opening this store in Columbus, Ohio [00:01:16.32] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}um we'd love to carry your stuff on consignment. Would you be interested [00:01:20.34] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}in that? I can send you all the information.' Most of the time the responses were [00:01:24.36] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}an enthusiastic yes. Um which, yeah it's not that way today. [00:01:29.38] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}Now there's tons of stores in tons of cities, and uh tons [00:01:34.41] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}of consignment stores that don't pay their consigners. So it's really kinda of uh [00:01:39.43] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}yeah, it's, it's ruined the field for a lot of people that are trustworthy and do pay on time [00:01:44.46] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}um because--and I absolutely understand where artists are coming from. Um, they can't trust [00:01:49.48] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}stores anymore. They can't trust that they're gonna get paid on time. Um but [00:01:54.51] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}you know back in 2005, there was like maybe a half dozen stores like this. [00:01:59.55] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}Um it was not, uh, yeah. It was just, it was a different field. [00:02:04.57] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}And so, um yeah. Everybody was like, 'yeah, we'll give it a shot! You know like, you're taking a risk, we'll take a [00:02:09.60] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}risk with you!' And we kinda all too those risks together. Um and I, I think we [00:02:14.62] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}you know, we still have a good number of consigners that we had when we opened the door, um, that [00:02:19.65] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}we still carry their stuff years later. [ interviewer ] so you said that you went to books [00:02:24.67] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}becuase you weren't familiar so you just went to books are started readÐdid you find that this was [00:02:29.70] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}useful like in terms of finding models, or? [ olivera ] yeah, absolutely, um [00:02:34.72] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}I personally am too shy to approach like [00:02:39.74] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}mentors, potential mentors. Um that it just it didn't even occur to me [00:02:44.77] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}like when I was opening the business, like I should talk to some other business owners, like, um I [00:02:49.80] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}yeah, that was too, that would be too overwhelming for me. So yeah so I [00:02:54.82] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}turned to books. Um and I feel like it got us a good solid start. [00:02:59.84] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}Since the business has been in operation, um I feel like I've gotten great advice from other business owners. [00:03:04.88] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}Um and people have been very generous with their time and their [00:03:09.91] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}um you know sharing of their experiences and skills and that's been very helpful [00:03:14.94] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}um but yeah, in the beginning, I, I turned to what I knew: books. [ interviewer ] so [00:03:19.96] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}do you still actively um seek new um new [00:03:24.99] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}crafters? [ olivera ] yeah, absolutely um [ interviewer ] do you still use Etsy? [00:03:30.01] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}[ olivera ] I do. Yeah, um I still use Etsy, I still uh [00:03:35.01] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}yeah look for new artists, um. I like, I like the randomness of it. Um, I do think [00:03:40.02] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}now unfortunately, like, it's populated with soÐit's great that it's populated [00:03:45.03] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}with so much stuff, um, but a lot of it is not necessarily [00:03:50.04] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}in kind of the, the kinds of things that we carry. So I feel like before, it was easier, right? Uh [00:03:55.05] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}I would type in, oh we need birthday cards, "birthday card" um and like a half a dozen birthday cards that were perfect [00:04:00.06] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}just immediately popped up. Um but now there might be two dozen um [00:04:05.06] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}perfect birthday cards but they're buried within a search of like 2,000 other items that aren't quite what [00:04:10.09] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}we're looking for. Um, so I also ook to curated lists. I look to [00:04:15.10] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}craft fairs, place that have already juried a certain selection of artists. [00:04:20.11] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}Um, for like craft fairs that kinda have like a similar aesthetic to we do. Um [00:04:25.12] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}'cause then I can look through their list of like 200 vendors and find good people. [ interviewer ] so what [00:04:30.12] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}what do you really look for, like what qualities do you look for? [00:04:35.15] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}You said about your aesthetic. How would you describe the aesthetic of Wholly Craft! and then I guess how do you [00:04:40.16] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}how do you determine like, 'I wanna carry that!' like [ Olivera ] yeah [00:04:45.17] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}um that's tough. That's a really tough question. Um, I like things that are [00:04:50.17] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}I would say we bring in things that are..functional [00:04:55.18] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}um, fun, I always use [00:05:00.19] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}that word to describe what we have. It's just fun things. Um things that are [00:05:05.20] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}quirky or make you laugh, or that there's something unexpected about them. [00:05:10.21] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}Um, and I [00:05:15.22] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}I don't know what makes that moment happen when I see something and I say like, 'Oh yes, this!' [00:05:20.22] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}Um that happens a lot, um but I don't know what it, I don't know what that little like [00:05:25.23] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}dose of magicÐand there isÐum that makes it like, this is perfect. [00:05:30.24] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}But um, you, and also I say, I should say like I sometimes say [00:05:35.26] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}this is perfect! Um and I love it and no one else does. [00:05:40.26] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}That's happens, I mean, that still happens plenty of times, um, we absolutely have things in the store that uh [00:05:45.27] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}sell very poorly that I just love! Um that we've just had forever [00:05:50.28] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}um, and but I don't know, in some way else I think it's like extra-special [00:05:55.28] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}when somebody comes in and is like, "I love this!" and I'm like, "I do too!" [00:06:00.29] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}There's something to that, too. [ interviewer ] Um so you mentioned um [00:06:05.30] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}zines and stuff like that, and you have zines and then you also have the posters thata reÐcould you talk about [ olivera ] we do [ interviewer ] can you talk about why [00:06:10.31] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}zines and talk maybe a little bit about the variety of posters that you have? [ olivera ] yeah um [00:06:15.32] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}I, I think the zines sorta come out of the same thing that all of this, this handmade movement [00:06:20.33] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}cam from, um, which is just uh looking for alternative channels to distribute [00:06:25.34] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}your creative products. So I think that zines were just kind of a [00:06:30.35] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}really natural fit for us at the beginning. It was um, you know, here's something that [00:06:35.36] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}somebody made, here's something that sombody wrote. Um and that they are both working to just like put out [00:06:40.37] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}themselves. Um and distribute, you know, to, to other people themselves. So [00:06:45.38] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}um it was just a perfect fit. So we have, all sorts of zines, um, [00:06:50.39] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}a little bit of everything. Um, I've looked to [00:06:55.41] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}at the beginning some of the like major zines distibutors like Microcosm, um [00:07:00.42] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}that they group together like hundreds, maybe even thousands, of uh different kinds of zines, [00:07:05.43] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}um and distribute them to like stores and zine libraries and places like that, um, [00:07:10.44] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}and then, and then we've been approached uh plenty of time by individual um zine makers [00:07:15.45] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}um to carry their things, too. So we do a little bit of both. [00:07:20.46] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}Yeah now we carry a little bit of books, um, we do carry the, carry the, uh, Celebrate [00:07:25.84] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}People's History, um, poster series from Justseeds um [00:07:30.85] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}and, uh, that's great. We've alwasy carried those since the beginning, um, [00:07:35.86] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}and yeah, there are a couple little things like that that like we've always carried those, we've always had the zines, [00:07:40.88] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}um, and we've always carried the CrimethInc posters right behind the [00:07:45.89] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}counter, which are the uh um, like one is about like definitions of beauty [00:07:50.90] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}and one is about definitions of gender. Um yeah it's like [00:07:55.91] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}"for every" oh "for every girl that throws out an Easy-Bake oven, there's a boy who picks one up," [00:08:00.92] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}and it kinda starts along that. Um and, and we've always had those in the same place for all the years we've [00:08:05.95] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}been open, um, because I love people, that people always like read those [00:08:10.96] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}as they're standing up at the counter. Like, they say that's your best sales space. You know, like you should really be selling [00:08:15.97] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}things back there. Um these posters are dollar a piece, you know, like sure, we've sold lots over the years but [00:08:20.98] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}um it's more about, like, how many people have like stood there read that? [00:08:26.00] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}Um and people who you would not think of as like people who believe [00:08:31.01] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}in like, um, sort of have radical ideas about gender, you would not see that [00:08:36.02] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}if you see them. Um, they're like, 'that is so true! that--you know what [00:08:41.03] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}I'm gonna get one of those and put it up in my classroom!' Um and I love that! I love that! So like that, that [00:08:46.04] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}actually makes feel like we're, we're also still doing something good, so. [00:08:49.63]
