{QTtext}{font:Arial}{justify:center}{size:16}{timeScale:100}{width:320}{height:40}{backColor:0, 0, 0} [00:00:00.00] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}[ interviewer ] So can you maybe talk, uh, step back uh a little bit [00:00:04.03] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}and um think about Ladyfest 2004? [ Olivera ] yeah-- [00:00:08.05] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}[ interviewer ] and so can you talk about sorta that process and [00:00:12.08] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}what type of, how did you come to all that so. [ olivera ] totally [00:00:16.09] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}Um, yeah, I mean that was actually like the big inspiration for the store [00:00:20.10] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}um was collaborating with um [00:00:24.12] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535} I think it was about 25, something like that, in total [00:00:28.14] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}local women to put together um Ladyfest 2004 [00:00:32.16] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}which was um sort of an all-inclusive arts festival [00:00:36.17] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}um that focused on women. So it was like [00:00:40.18] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}visual art and music and performance and [00:00:44.20] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}um workshops and all kinds of great [00:00:48.23] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}stuff. And it was a I think it was like a 3-day [00:00:52.24] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}weekend um full just like a packed-- [ interviewer ] Memorial Day [ Olivera ] just a packed full, yeah Memorial Day weekend [00:00:56.26] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}packed full schedule of um all kinds of events. [00:01:00.27] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}and it was really successful and it was a fundraiser, and we raised [00:01:04.29] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}um a lot of money for the Girlz Rhythm and Rock Camp [00:01:08.31] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}of Ohio and for the Central Ohio Abortion Access Fund. Um [00:01:12.33] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}and it was gosh, I wanna say it was at least [00:01:16.34] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}a year long process, maybe even like 14 months, um planning process [00:01:20.35] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}to put that together. And it was um really intense [00:01:24.37] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}it was like 14 months of like weekly meetings, um with everyone in the group, plus [00:01:28.39] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}um your committee meetings on the side and there was [00:01:32.41] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}so much, and it was so great because nobody had ever done something like that before so we all [00:01:36.42] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}just kind of like you know contributed our own talent to it [00:01:40.45] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}um and it came together really well and it was that same, like, DIY [00:01:44.48] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}sort of thing, that inspired the handmade movement and [00:01:48.50] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}zines and all of that I think. Um just uh like hey! [00:01:52.52] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}we wanna do this, there's nobody really we can ask permission [00:01:56.53] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}from, there's nothing like we didn't seek out sponsors or anything like that [00:02:00.54] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}we just kind of did it, um, because we wanted to see more [00:02:04.56] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}things like that happen. So yeah, that's [00:02:08.58] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}um that's something that I'm really proud of and I think we should all be really proud of. [00:02:12.61] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}[ interviewer ] so can you maybe talk about some of the um [00:02:16.63] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}the literacy that went into that? So the reading and the writing [00:02:20.64] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}'cause 2004, the, like Facebooking [00:02:24.66] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}didn't exist. Facebook is used to promote stuff like crazy, so like can you talk about [00:02:28.68] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}that that what was, like what that was like, or how [00:02:32.70] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}you went about doing that? [ Olivera ] yeah, that a good--yeah, it's sometimes it's hard to remember like [00:02:36.71] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}the days before the internet, like what we did. Um I [00:02:40.72] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}I definitely have memories of like pasting together flyers [00:02:44.74] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}just like, like uh like cutting out pictures and pasting together [00:02:48.77] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}flyers and um and yeah just like going and like tacking [00:02:52.79] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}them up in local coffee shop and things, um, uh [00:02:56.81] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}wow yeah. Um I remember it was a big [00:03:00.82] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}deal when we found sombody who could do a professional-looking program for us [00:03:04.85] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}um because none of had those kind of skill, um, the kind of like [00:03:08.87] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}computer, graphic design sorts of skills, um [00:03:12.89] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}to be able to put something like that together. Um so that was a big deal, I think it was like a [00:03:16.90] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}CCAD student or something, um, so it was a big deal when we , we found somebody that could do [00:03:20.91] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}that. Um, in terms of like reading [00:03:24.94] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}and writingum, gosh. [00:03:28.96] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}I-I mean I just remember like trying like [00:03:32.98] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}finding other Ladyfests. I think, I think [00:03:37.00] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}there was an internet presence for something. Yes! I remember now, the original [00:03:41.00] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}Ladyfest in Olympia, Washington had archived everything. [00:03:45.01] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}Everything from their planning process on some [00:03:49.03] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}you know like 2000 website, like web [00:03:53.05] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}from the year 2000 that was just like, all-like a text document of [00:03:57.07] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}all of their meeting minutes, and all of their, um, yes, and I remember looking at [00:04:03.09] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}looking to that when we first got started, um, and just to kinda to see what the process was and see [00:04:09.11] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}um what they went through and everything and it was really, like, an exhaustive [00:04:15.12] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}um document of-of everything, and that was really helpful. [00:04:21.13] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}Um, yeah, 'cause we yeah, we did, we you know had meeting agendas and meeting minutes [00:04:27.14] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}and um I think a large box of that stuff still lives at Wholly Craft! [00:04:33.16] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}Um, but yeah, yeah. Um yeah in terms of [00:04:39.19] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}publicizing it was it, yeah, it was just like a lot of flyers, um, a lot [00:04:45.19] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}of flyers. I think that we, it helped and this was like part of the plan, that we were holding [00:04:51.20] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}these little mini-fundraisers throughout the year in the year leading up to the actual festival so that [00:04:57.22] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}by the time this Ladyfest thing came around, um, people knew what it was [00:05:03.23] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}um we didn't have to kind of like do all of that at once, like explaining what it is, and trying to sell the passes and [00:05:09.26] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}um having the schedule. It was like people heard about Ladyfest throughout the year and that it was building to this big thing. [00:05:15.28] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}Um, yeah. [ Interviewer ] well, do you have anything else that you um [00:05:21.30] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}would like to share, any stories or, or um things you would like to share about um [00:05:27.31] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}literacy, reading, writing, meaning-making, composing, whether we're talking about technology [00:05:33.34] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}not with technology, when you were a child, within your family, [00:05:39.36] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}[ Olivera ] I do have a, a kind fo fun story to share about uh, like [00:05:45.37] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}when I learned about like the danger of the written word when I was a kid. Um it was [00:05:51.38] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}there, I remember being like 5 or 6 years old, um, I guess I must have been like 6 'cause I knew how to read [00:05:57.40] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}um just a very basic amount. And at the bottom of my pajama drawer [00:06:03.42] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}there was this term paper that was shoved down there, and um it was by my brother [00:06:09.45] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}and I could read the cover page, 'cause it was just, it said, 'by Jack Bratich' and it said, 'America: [00:06:15.46] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}the Bloody Knife' and like a picture of a bloody knife. [00:06:21.48] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}Um I was like why is this in the bottom of my pajama drawer? Like this has gotta be some like [00:06:27.50] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}what is it? It's somethign dangerous, it's something hidden, um. And I [00:06:33.52] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}didn't know what it was, uh, but it was down there forever, and then I eventually kind of learned, evetually [00:06:39.54] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}it disappeared first from the pajama drawer, um, and I learned what it was. It probably disappeared like after I asked [00:06:45.55] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}like 'what is it this Bloody Knife in my pajama drawer?' Um and then I [00:06:51.56] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}heard it was a paper that my brother had written um in 8th grade [00:06:57.58] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}about like uh, like American imperialism, and like, the things we've done in other [00:07:03.61] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}countries. Um, and, and he got in sooo [00:07:09.64] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}much trouble at home for it. He didn't get in trouble at school for it, 'cause it wasn't like he, like he didn't make anything [00:07:15.65] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}up, he researched it, it was a term paper. Um but it was like, he was in 8th grade and so [00:07:21.66] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}um and I think he did get an A on it, too [00:07:27.68] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}but my parents were so horrified by this and so [00:07:33.70] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}so scared because they came from a communist country where you could not write those kinds of term papers [00:07:39.73] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}um and they were convinced that the whole family was going to be deported because of this, um, they [00:07:45.75] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}were 100% convinced that the school was going to report this uh this term paper [00:07:51.76] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}and label us as like traitors to America, um, and we were going to have to back to Old Country. So they, he [00:07:57.78] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}got in so much trouble for this. And it was, it was kinda like a thing that wasn't talked about [00:08:03.81] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}for year in the house. My parents were so mad, um, and then years later, [00:08:09.83] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}my parents totally did a 180, and like had, like issued a formal apology [00:08:15.85] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}to my brother. Like they, they were so sorry that [00:08:21.86] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}they had um that they had punished him for speaking the truth. For like [00:08:27.87] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}finding things out and wanting to tell people about them. Um, and they were [00:08:33.89] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}yeah, they were really like, 'we're sorry. We were in the wrong. um, you at 13 [00:08:39.93] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}knew more about this than we did, um, and we're sorry we tried to silence you.' Um [00:08:45.94] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}it was uh, it was a very nice moment in our family. [ interviewer ] What was your brother's reaction? [ Olivera ] Um he [00:08:51.95] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}he's an eay-going guy. He was like, he had gotten over it by that point, you know. [00:08:57.97] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}So, so but he was very grateful of the, the apology, that they had come around and [00:09:03.99] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}um I think that we're lucky to have such flexible parents in that sense, too. Like um rarely [00:09:10.01] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}do parents issue formal apologies to their children, for like, 'we're very sorry that we did this when you were growing up. We [00:09:16.02] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}were wrong." So yeah, it was, I think, I think we're both sort of grateful to have parents like that [00:09:22.04] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}[ Interviewer ] And so what, uh, does your, does your brother have a [00:09:28.05] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}I guess, you said that your brother um [00:09:34.07] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}was telling truth right or whatever. So what does your brother do now? Like [ Olivera ] He's actually a professor at Rutgers [00:09:40.08] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}University. He teaches communications, um, and he wrote his dissertation on conspiracy [00:09:46.09] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}theory in American culture. [ interviewer ] nice. [ Olivera ] So yeah, yeah. It's sorta, he [00:09:52.11] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}went on that same path. [ Interviewer ] So um, anything else that you'd like to share or talk about? [00:09:58.15] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}[ Olivera ] uh, no, I think that's, that's a pretty, yeah, exhaustive history. [00:10:04.86]
