{QTtext}{font:Arial}{justify:center}{size:16}{timeScale:100}{width:437}{height:40}{backColor:0, 0, 0} [00:00:00.00] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}[ Bowen ] Well i mean, it's, you know, and I say this to people, I never thought [00:00:04.01] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}I would work in a multicultural center. I mean, I'm a gay, biracial [00:00:08.02] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}kid from Kansas. I probably had it stamped on the back of my head, but of course you can't see the back of your head, so [00:00:12.02] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}I had no idea. You know know I mean, like. Plus I used to wear my hair longer, so you wouldn't be able to [00:00:16.03] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}see that anyway. But uh. Um [00:00:20.03] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}I don't know. Everything that I do is connected to [00:00:24.04] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}multiculturalism. And I say that because I think multiculturalism is connected to [00:00:28.04] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}everything, you know. One of the things I always start when I standing in front of a classroom [00:00:32.05] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}for the first time, or when I can see that look in people's eyes that are like, why does this apply to me? [00:00:36.06] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}And I say: I am multicultural. When you say the word [00:00:40.06] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}multicultural, you're talking about me because I represent identity categories that [00:00:44.06] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}we typically call multicultural, and [00:00:48.07] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}some of those identities are multicultural and some of them are not like being male [00:00:52.07] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}um and able-bodied. So everyone is multicultural [00:00:56.08] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}you may not see that, but I believe that you are. [00:01:00.08] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}and because of that, I believe that we are all invited to this dialog, [00:01:04.08] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}we all have to join it in our own ways. Um and [00:01:08.09] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}so because of that I um, I just believe [00:01:12.09] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}that when you truly practice multiculturalism--I wrote a piece [00:01:16.10] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}on this, again, just wrote a piece, that was put in one of my professor's [00:01:20.10] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}textbooks on advocacy as love action, which I think is a paraphrase [00:01:24.10] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}from, the Call and Response video, um, something West. [00:01:28.11] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}Do you know know I'm talking about? [ interviewer ] I-I'm sorry. [00:01:32.12] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}[ Bowen ] He does human trafficking work, and he-- [ interviewer ] oh, um [ Bowen ] It's not [00:01:36.12] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}Kanye West, it's something West, anyway [00:01:40.13] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}um, but for me, advocacy is my love of work for others. [00:01:44.13] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}And that's it. And so for me that's [00:01:48.14] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}connected to that when I came out to my aunt at 17 [00:01:52.14] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}uh she told me, she just sat cried with me. But she [00:01:56.15] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}made it be known to me that there was nothing so wrong with me [00:02:00.15] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}that I didn't deserved to be loved. And you know one thing [00:02:04.15] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}I I say a lot to people, when we're talking is, [00:02:08.16] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}when--and again I'm sorry for cussing on this, I've done it a few times-- [00:02:12.16] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}[ interviewer ] totally fine [ Bowen ] When you're told that you're shit [00:02:16.17] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}from an early age, and you're told it again and again and again and again [00:02:20.18] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}odds are, you're gonna turn out to be shit. Because you've embraced this belief [00:02:25.18] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}that you don't matter or you're not worthy, so helping people uncover that they're absolutely [00:02:30.19] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}not that there's good stuff under there is one of the [00:02:35.19] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}reasons I love counseling. It's one of the reasons I love wellness coaching. It's one of the reasons that I uh [00:02:40.20] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}really created the Open Doors program to say, hey, this is what this [00:02:45.20] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}is, these are points of disconnection in which you keep each other at arms length [00:02:50.20] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}as opposed to really encountering people. And I don't know, I've gotten more sappy, and I say as I get older [00:02:55.21] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}I know, like I'm 25 now, and if I look at this back when I'm 75, I'll be like woah, he was super young like [00:03:00.21] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}what were you saying! But um I quote the Dali Lama a lot and I say [00:03:05.22] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}you can love anyone if you know their story. And I truly believe that um [00:03:10.22] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}you may not like them most days, you may disagree with their choices, but you can [00:03:15.23] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}understand how they got to that point. And my professor tells this [00:03:20.23] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}great story of how--she does pro bono work. Um and she [00:03:25.24] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}does psychological assessments with people. So she was doing a MMPI which is the Minnesota Multiphasic [00:03:31.25] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}Personality Inventory, um, on this child. And it takes about an hour [00:03:37.26] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}and a half to complete. He got it done in 10 minutes and turned it in. [00:03:43.26] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}And it's a bubble scantron sheet, so she's looking at it, she just like, this doesn't make sense, she doesn't make sense. And she turns it [00:03:49.27] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}to the side, and he's bubbled in, 'Fuck You.' [00:03:55.27] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}And she said she paused, and she said, you know I thought I would be angry. [00:04:01.28] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}I thought I would be ticked because here I donated four hours of my time to come in and do this for this person but I stepped back and [00:04:07.28] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}and thought, wow he doesn't even know me. He doesn't, I'm just another person, another adult in his life. [00:04:13.29] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}What has happened to him at this point, up until now for him to [00:04:19.29] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}take the time to bubble in that response and hand it to me. [00:04:26.00] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}And she's like, it was still annoying, like still [00:04:32.01] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}driven like an hour to do this, but I was able to step back from my own ego and my own place and say [00:04:38.02] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}well what's going on with this person, and can I do anything? And so that story was really profound for me because it [00:04:44.02] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}helps me kinda check myself. Helps me say you're really irritated, why? I mean [00:04:50.03] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}really, you only came to give this person your time, they didn't agree what they were gonna do with it [00:04:56.03] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}so if you give your time to someone, you don't get to be angry about how they use [00:05:02.04] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}that time. [ Interviewer ] So you mentioned Open Doors, can you um [00:05:08.04] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}talk about the Open Doors program and sorta how that came into development? [00:05:14.05] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}[ Bowen ] Well I was the Bias Assessment GAA and it was my job--again, never thought I would do multicultural [00:05:20.05] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}work--stepped in on the first day, and they're like well here's all these events that happen on campus. [00:05:26.06] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}People who have been harassed, you know with someone banging on their door like five night [00:05:32.07] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}in a row calling them racial epithet, um or someone being beaten up in an alley because they looked transgender [00:05:38.07] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}or too femme. Um, I would just read these and I was just shocked, and we had [00:05:44.08] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}this one student come in who, um, and again talking about the power of words, [00:05:50.08] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}he was an African-American male, came in, and was just crying [00:05:56.08] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}like just crying. And he worked with us, and so I sat him down and I said, what's going on? [00:06:02.09] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}'Cause you're not normally this upset. You're usually very happy. What's going on? [00:06:08.09] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}He said, well I have this class in this building, and I go there two times a week. [00:06:14.10] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}And I use the restroom, and someone has [00:06:20.10] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}written in magic marker in letters this big, the n-word, on the side of the stall. [00:06:26.10] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}And I told my professor, and I told the [00:06:32.11] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}maintenance staff, and it's been up for two weeks. [00:06:38.11] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}And luckily, in my position, I was able to call my supervisor who was then able to call the building manager and they got it removed within three hours or something like that. [00:06:44.12] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}But the thing was, he clearly knew that it was not directed at him. You know so many people say [00:06:50.12] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}oh, well it must be someone direct ---something directed directly at you. But his question was, is there just so [00:06:56.13] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}much hate for people like me, that something like this gets written and not only that [00:07:02.14] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}but nothing's done about it. And so I just, I was encountering a lot of sadness. [00:07:08.14] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}Um and sadness, I don't believe is an inherently bad thing, but if we don't do something about it leads to more sadness. [00:07:14.14] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}Um so I said, well, I think I can do something. I mean it may not be perfect, but so [00:07:20.15] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}I picked this idea for an eight hour, two-day training called, um anti-bias training. [00:07:26.16] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}And I put together a paper manuscript that was like 300 pages of like different--I,I [00:07:32.17] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}modeled it off the Safe Zones program, and I did that because I've always felt very fortunate to be gay and that there are these [00:07:38.17] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}programs that are in place for our community to help us feel valued and like we matter. But so many [00:07:44.18] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}other historically marginalized populations don't get that. And I said, well that's not right, like why [00:07:50.19] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}should we get something that other people don't? Like why aren't we learning from this and helping other people? SO [00:07:56.19] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}I pitched it. And I went around to like different directors and Student Life and I said, well bias is bad, right? [00:08:02.20] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}It's really hard to argue with that one! [ interviewer ] right! [ Bowen ] And I totally took it from my advisor who used to go around and [00:08:08.20] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}say suicide's really sad, right--'cause she designed the suicide gatekeeper training-- [00:08:14.20] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}what if we could do something about it, what if there were an 8-hour, 4-hour structured [00:08:20.21] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}presentation, workshop, something to address it? Would this be something your office would support? [00:08:26.21] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}And so I got buy-in from like 10 different offices. And so, I took that to my [00:08:32.22] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}director, and I said there are 10 offices, I'm sure there are more, but these are the 10 I went to, who think this might be [00:08:38.22] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}a good idea. Can I do something with this. And she said, sure. And it was totally like a side project, you know, here I was doing clinical internship, [00:08:44.23] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}Master's program, and doing these other responsibilities, but I put something together. And it was rough the first [00:08:50.23] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}first couple times, but it really focused on giving people these illustrations of what bias looked [00:08:56.23] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}like in really meaningful ways. Because, we're smart, thinking people. I mean, the average incoming freshman at OSU has a 29 ACT [00:09:02.24] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}they're not by any stretch of the imagination uninformed or illiterate [00:09:08.25] {font:Arial}{size:14}{Plain}{textColor:65535, 65535, 65535}for that matter. Um. [00:09:12.45]
