Remedial Writing Burnham, Don (2009-04-22) >>DON: When I was in junior high, I got to attend a remedial writing place. One of those places that they send kids that get bad grades in English and they need help with their writing. That was the punishment of my parents for my English class grades because I hated writing English papers. And I went to this place to "get help" supposedly, and it ended up being an enlightening experience for me because I found out I could write; I just wanted to write about what I wanted to write about and not what English teachers wanted me to write about. It wasn't that I had trouble writing, I just didn't like the topics that we had to write about in class. So as soon as I started there, we went through the basic stuff. And to graduate the program, you had to write your own two page paper and I wrote about the way kids in class interrupt their teachers so the teachers don't teach as much as they normally would. And basically I blew the teacher away. She didn't, the first question out of her mouth was "Why are you here?" She said well you can write. And when my parents read the report, they said that I could write too. I just tried to explain to them the best I could that I didn't like English class. But I love reading, which was weird. So from then on I've always procrastinated, but I've always written decent papers, and I think I've gotten over the whole "I don't like writing certain subject" anymore, because I know I can and I know I shouldn't get bad grades. And that is my story.
