{QTtext}{font:Arial}{justify:center}{size:16}{timeScale:100}{width:269}{height:70}{backColor:0, 0, 0} [00:00:00.00] [ Alright, so why don't you go ahead and tell us your literacy story. ] [00:00:04.03] I am a teacher at a Catholic school. It is a K-8 [00:00:08.10] building. I am one of the state employees. So I am in a very unique position. [00:00:12.16] Um, my title is called Academic Assistant Teacher [00:00:16.20] I am not an intervention specialists, which is what has been held in that [00:00:20.20] position in the past. I actually hold a K-8 licensure, [00:00:24.32] which is really neat because I can work with any kiddo in the building. [00:00:28.41] I have my regulars, but I can have a student that I work with [00:00:32.41] on a one time basis or short term. Um, the goal is [00:00:36.42] certainly that they are there short term, and then are kind of weaned off the program. [00:00:40.44] But it is a very unique position. It's pretty great. [00:00:44.54] I work, uh, I do team teaching. [00:00:48.64] I work in classrooms, I do small group, I do one on one. [00:00:52.71] I do a little bit of everything. It's kind of a 'jack of all trades' position. [00:00:56.73] Um, one challenge [00:01:00.75] has been that I am not Catholic. Being a state employee [00:01:04.86] I am not required to be. [00:01:08.88] Um, it has been a challenge for me to learn the verbiage of the Catholic faith. [00:01:12.96] Um, I try to hide that from the students. [00:01:17.01] There are very few students that have figured out that I'm not Catholic. [00:01:21.03] I try to make that not known, only out of respect for them; that they go out of their way to be there for their faith, [00:01:25.04] and I really respect that. And I don't want to them to inquire too much [00:01:29.13] of why I'm not. I am a Christian. But I just don't [00:01:33.13] want them to look at me different from them, I guess, [00:01:37.19] to question why I'm not Catholic. Um, as a state employee, I'm very [00:01:41.22] limited with what I can work with as far as religion goes. [00:01:45.23] Um, I just don't go to religion classes, [00:01:49.33] but I have students come to me for testing, [00:01:53.40] so I can read the test to them, or they'll work on a paper. Again, I just don't announce [00:01:57.46] that they're, that I'm not supposed to work on that with them. [00:02:01.48] Um, it's been very exciting, though. I love to learn about different faiths. [00:02:05.50] And I love to learn from them. Um, so it's cute [00:02:09.57] that they are teaching me, and they don't know it. [00:02:13.64] [ Interview: That's cool. So, ] [00:02:17.65] [ Um, do you want to talk about any students in particular that, you know, ] [00:02:21.69] [ that you've had experiences with? ] I do have a student [00:02:25.71] um, she is now an eighth grader. Um, Confirmation is a big deal [00:02:29.72] in the eighth grade. And, again, I'm learning what a big deal that is. [00:02:33.80] She had asked me last school year to be her Confirmation sponsor. [00:02:37.85] And I hesitated, um, in responding [00:02:41.90] to her for the fact that I'm not Catholic. [00:02:45.91] And I didn't even know if I was allowed to be a sponsor or what that even was. [00:02:49.93] So, I inquired a little bit further with her, just, you know, [00:02:53.93] what does a sponsor have to do? [00:02:57.95] But hesitated in inquiring too much, just because I didn't want her to catch on that [00:03:02.01] I wasn't Catholic. How can I hid this from her, but at the same time [00:03:06.00] honor what she's asking me? I'm assuming that that's [00:03:10.01] something big. So I did inquire further [00:03:14.02] with a few teacher friends that I knew it was safe to ask that. [00:03:18.10] We do have Sisters in the building, so I try to hide [00:03:22.16] the fact that I'm not Catholic. I just don't... um, the powers that be [00:03:26.18] I don't want them to know that I'm not Catholic, even though I'm not required. [00:03:30.19] So, um, all of my teacher friends that I asked that to had revealed that [00:03:34.20] that's a pretty big honor to do that [00:03:38.22] um, and I'm still trying to understand that, um, what that means [00:03:42.28] exactly. So, uh, I also understood from them that [00:03:46.30] I cannot be a sponsor. And, I, it was really hard [00:03:50.31] for me to go back to her and say, "I can't do this for you, even though [00:03:54.38] this is a great honor for you to ask me. [00:03:58.43] You know, I'm not a member of your family." I understood that that's usually who is asked. You know, an aunt or [00:04:02.50] mom's best friend, or someone who has been very present in their lives. [00:04:06.51] Um, I had with her for four years now. [ Interviewer: So you were a big presence.] [00:04:10.53] I do feel like I am very present, but I'm not, you know, family, and I'm not Catholic. [00:04:14.55] [ Interview: Well to her you are {family}. ] [00:04:18.58] Well, that's sweet. Um, I had to break the news [00:04:22.63] to her that I was not able to do that, because I'm not Catholic. [00:04:26.67] And I also had to explain to her [00:04:30.69] that I'm not Catholic, only because I'm not required to be. [00:04:34.81] Um, so I could tell that she was disappointed, that you know, she choose me for a reason [00:04:38.92] and it was just, you know, the understanding [00:04:42.94] of the differences of, you know, I am Christian. [00:04:47.00] And that's something that I'm still trying to understand, you know, that in the Catholic faith [00:04:51.01] that, um, that the way that they identify it as, is [00:04:55.01] you are either, you are either Catholic or you're Protestant. And in my mind [00:04:59.10] um, you know a Christian can be very different [00:05:03.18] religions, that you're identified by labels [00:05:07.19] um, that there's different lingo used, not just Catholic or Protestant. [00:05:11.21] So, um, it's definitely a rewarding position. Um, and I'm [00:05:15.22] love learning about the different faiths. I love understanding it further. [00:05:19.33] I love having deep discussions. I love learning from the students [00:05:23.40] that, um, you know, I'm digging through their books [00:05:27.45] as much as they are, trying to help them with their homework, [00:05:31.47] at the same time trying to cover up that I'm not Catholic. Um, but just teaching the skills [00:05:35.48] of, how do you find an answer to something. So using those literacy skills [00:05:39.49] um, at the same time, but trying to hide something. [00:05:43.51] at the same time. [ Interviewer: Yeah, that's so interesting. Do you still get to interact with her [00:05:47.58] [ now? ] I do. She's still there in eigth grade [00:05:51.63] and, um, I did ask her not to share [00:05:55.65] that I was Catholic. Um, I assume that she shared that with her parents. [00:05:59.66] because she had asked me that. But I would [00:06:03.76] you know, like her to keep my secret. And I feel [00:06:07.84] guilty asking her to keep a secret. But I do, um, again [00:06:11.86] just respectfully so, don't want to announce to the students that I'm not Catholic. [00:06:15.89] [ Interviewer: Alight. Well, thank you so much [00:06:20.02] for sharing] You're welcome. [00:06:22.32]
