Time transcripts of #1 David Martin Mission President [00:00:00.08] I went on a full-time mission, two-year mission for my church, the LDS Church. [00:00:06.67] and I served in Idaho. That's where I went, [00:00:10.33] and my mission president who was an educator, [00:00:13.78] his name was Sherm Crump, Sherman Crump, [00:00:15.97] and he expected all the missionaries to read, um, to read [00:00:24.27] the Standard Works which are the Bible, [00:00:27.39] including the Old and New Testament, [00:00:29.59] the Doctrine and Covenants, The Book of Mormon, [00:00:31.60] and Pearl of Great Price which are scriptures, [00:00:34.69] and he expected us to read them in a certain time period [00:00:39.37] and then to reread them and reread them. [00:00:41.59] In addition, we had to memorize certain discussions [00:00:46.31] and there, I believe there were seven discussions [00:00:49.26] and we also had to memorize 120 separate scriptures [00:00:55.26] and so that process gave me the skills necessary [00:01:02.01] for me to really become a better student [00:01:05.17] when I returned from my mission. [00:01:07.61] And before we could become a senior companion [00:01:10.34] and be in charge of our own area, [00:01:13.63] we had to memorize all those scriptures [00:01:17.03] and memorize the discussions [00:01:19.44] and have read the Standard Works, [00:01:21.16] so it was quite a process to be entrusted [00:01:28.35] with your own area as a senior companion [00:01:30.86] but that was the way that President Crump ran the mission, [00:01:35.05] so I'm grateful for him for the way that he instilled [00:01:42.27] in all the missionaries that he was President over [00:01:44.48] the desire and the skills necessary to [00:01:47.87] memorize and to understand what you memorized.
