Acknowledgments

First and foremost, I would like to thank Lou Ann and Lew Herstead who provided me with a tour of their monument company and who generously answered numerous email questions, responding with great thoughtfulness and detail. Because of the dual nature of this project, I've only included a fraction of all the knowledge they shared, and I look forward to working with them in the future on a project that will be a more in-depth exploration into the evolving nature of monument design.

I would also like to thank Doris Peterson and all of the other wonderful people at the Office of Information Technology at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Besides just showing me how to do something, every person I worked with there also took the time to explain the process to me, enabling me to figure out not only what to do, but why to do it. That kind of help is invaluable, and I am certainly grateful.
