Time transcripts of Mariah [00:00:00.02] [00:00:04.03] By the way, I can totally edit this, [00:00:08.05] so you can just say anything. I'll understand. [00:00:16.10] So why don't you introduce yourself? [00:00:18.11] Hi name is Mariah Bowens, and I'm going to be an incoming Freshman [00:00:24.12] from Columbus Ohio, and I'm going to be studying exploration. [00:00:30.4] This is my daughter Maliah. [00:00:34.0] [00:00:36.18] She's 11 months old, [00:00:38.19] and she'll be at the daycare all day, while mommy goes and studies. [00:00:45.6] So you're going to be starting off in exploration. [00:00:49.99] Is there a major you want to eventually move towards? [00:00:56.29] Probably Business. [00:00:58.31] Why do you want to study business? [00:01:04.35] It just seems like the... I haven't looked into it anymore [00:01:09.00] but it just seems like the kind of thing that I should be doing. [00:01:12.42] Like working with people and managing things. [00:01:18.9] So what is it going to be like starting school with your daughter? [00:01:23.00] Well hopefully I can make it as easy as possible. I mean, [00:01:28.51] in my time to study I'll have to still take care of her, [00:01:32.00] so hopefully we can just make this transition, all the way through. [00:01:40.59] Are you taking a first year writing, first year composition? [00:01:46.2] Yeah. [00:01:48.62] Did you take English classes in High School? [00:01:52.63] Yeah. [00:01:54.64] Did you enjoy those classes? [00:01:56.15] Yeah I did. [00:01:57.5] Can you tell us a story about one of those classes? [00:02:03.0] And like some ways that you thought the teacher [00:02:07.6] was doing a good job and some ways that you think could have been improved? [00:02:14.4] Well, I had my English teacher in 11th grade, her name was Ms. Strother, [00:02:20.6] and I thought she was an all around good teacher, [00:02:22.3] because she was able to teach but she also made everything, [00:02:27.7] when she taught she told stories about her life so it was easier for the whole class to incorporate. [00:02:34.2] And she was also very funny, so it was just really nice for her to be a teacher [00:02:40.5] instead of just standing there and having us read out of a book the whole class. [00:02:44.99] Not talking to the teacher and having to just read. [00:02:49.02] And then answering questions, we just did everything together. [00:02:53.06] So that's the way I like to learn. [00:02:57.08] Could you, what other classes did you take in High School? [00:03:01.09] Math and Psychology, let's see, Chemistry, Biology. [00:03:10.3] Did you have a favorite class? [00:03:13.14] My favorite class... [00:03:19.17] My favorite class was probably Chemistry. [00:03:21.19] I actually liked it, so, I always liked Science. [00:03:25.20] When you were growing up, your parents emphasized things like one subject over another? [00:03:30.9] Did they say, you know, you should study Science or Business or English? [00:03:36.5] What did they care about? [00:03:37.29] Really they cared about math because that was a hard subject for me, [00:03:42.7] so really they pushed, we tried to study math all the time. [00:03:47.6] But everything else was really pretty much easy for me. [00:03:52.00] What kinds of reading materials were around the house? [00:03:55.6] Did your parents have books about math, or fiction or non-fiction? [00:04:03.3] Really well, since my dad does carpentry he had things like that. [00:04:09.50] It wasn't really anything that I would pick up, pick up and read it or anything. [00:04:16.66] I had chapter books and just regular childrens books, [00:04:20.3] and the ones that dad would bring home from school, but... [00:04:24.4] Could you tell us a story about the kinds of books you enjoyed reading, [00:04:29.1] or like learning when you were growing up? Like what books helped you the most? [00:04:37.61] Is that a good question? [00:04:41.64] No, really growing up, the books that I liked were the ones with pictures in them. (Laughing) [00:04:49.68] Always the ones with pictures. I mean they still had writing in them [00:04:53.00] but mostly I liked the books that had pictures in them. [00:04:57.74] I mean, but now, when I read books, whenever I read them [00:05:02.8] I try to picture what's going on in my head, because it makes the book more interesting. [00:05:09.78] When you are reading to your daughter, what is somethings that you're thinking about [00:05:17.81] that you want to teach her, about reading? [00:05:21.83] Is there anything you want to emphasize for education? [00:05:27.00] Really I just want to... [00:05:32.5] Like my mom she didn't sit down and read with me everyday when I was younger. [00:05:37.93] So I think that if I sit down and read with my daughter everyday, [00:05:40.5] and try to read everything, to teach her letters and colors and all that early. [00:05:45.97] She might, she can catch on to things more when she's older. [00:05:51.00] It'll be easier for her to learn in school if we try to incorporate reading in her day, every day. [00:05:59.99] [00:06:02.04] [00:06:06.05] Is there anything that comes to mind that you could tell us a story about? [00:06:10.8] In your education career? [00:06:14.08] That has been formative, that has been very much something [00:06:20.11] that helped you along the way helped you get to OSU? [00:06:27.4] Really what helped me get to OSU was being able to still stay in school after my daughter. [00:06:35.1] I thought that since I had the baby and everything, everything was going to go downhill. [00:06:39.99] Because it was my Junior year in High School when I found out that I was pregnant. [00:06:44.9] And I didn't have her til my Senior year. [00:06:46.99] But I was able to leave the school that I was at [00:06:50.15] and actually have an in-home tutor for the six weeks. [00:06:53.7] And I was able to come back to school. But really what I did, [00:06:56.7] I went to the virtual high school, [00:06:59.81] where I was cross enrolled at my high school and the virtual high school. [00:07:03.1] And whatever I didn't complete at the High School, [00:07:05.4] you could just go to there and complete it on the computer. [00:07:08.43] So basically I made it through when I applied to OSU I still had my good Grade Point Average. [00:07:14.8] And I was able to, in my application, write in the hardships that I went through [00:07:23.00] with having my daughter and still being able to finish school [00:07:26.3] and wanting to go on to college still. [00:07:30.47] I think I've done really good in getting into school still with the baby, [00:07:38.00] because it's hard, sometimes. [00:07:42.55] Can you tell us a story about what that program was like? [00:07:46.57] Doing the, having the tutor? [00:07:49.00] Like what were some things the tutor did that really helped you? [00:07:54.62] Really, the tutor, what we really did, [00:07:59.8] is this teacher at my High School would assign assignments for me and the tutor to do together. [00:08:06.1] And really the tutor didn't really help me. You really have to help yourself. [00:08:10.70] Because all we did together was open the textbook, [00:08:13.9] read the chapter and answer the questions at the end of the chapter. [00:08:17.00] So really I don't, really I wasn't doing what everybody was doing at school, [00:08:21.5] because they were doing projects and writing essays and everything [00:08:27.1] when I was just reading and answering questions. [00:08:30.80] So, it was really different from being at school. [00:08:35.5] Because I liked to be around people, and work with people, [00:08:38.84] and really I was just by myself with the baby. [00:08:42.86] Because the baby was able, she was in the house [00:08:46.87] she was there while I was tutoring but she would sleep most of the time. [00:08:50.88] [00:08:54.89] I don't know, what else do you want to talk about? [00:08:59.99] We talked about like your early literacy at home, your early literacy at school. [00:09:06.97] Literacy in High School, I mean... [00:09:10.99] Is there something you want to talk about with your daughter? [00:09:15.01] [00:09:19.02] [00:09:23.07] [00:09:27.11] I don't think she's going to settle down, I'm sorry. [00:09:31.12] Don't worry, it's totally fine.
